First Poke at the Donut.
Donuts. Who doesn't love them? It was a sad, sad day when I was told in 2010 I could no longer eat wheat, or eggs. I thought my donut days were behind me. Then on a sunny fall afternoon in 2015, I passed by my new mecca. Cartems Donuterie in Vancouver.

Glorious gluten free vegan donuts were just waiting for me to devour. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Seriously. Add a Maple Bourbon Bacon with a long double espresso from 49th Parallel , and I'm as close to heaven as food can make me. But I digress.
My love of donuts may have to be put on hold for the next 8 months, as I will be be heading to Montreal to, well, "poke the donut". Such a lovely expression, with yes, multiple meanings. Who doesn't love a double entrendre as much as a Maple Bacon donut?! Look at me, speaking french and not even trying!
It's not really my fault the donut will get poked. I need to be in Montreal until next summer as my significant other is in grad school at Concordia. And I don't speak french beyond "merci d'avoir choisi Air Canada", which won't carry me too far beyond the airport. So it's a kind of self inflicted opt out of work life. Those who followed my last blog, Quitters Always Prosper will probably not be too surprised about that!
People keep asking me what I will be doing. I honestly don't have a clue.
I HAVE signed up for a conversational french class starting at the end of January. Beyond that, I'm envisioning a life of Netflix, walks to the corner depanneur or (if feeling energetic) the Jean Talon market for groceries, trying to stay warm in a winter colder than I can imagine, and practicing my grade 10 french on unsuspecting locals.
I have found one place that purports to have GF donuts. Doughnats on Decarie. I will have to check it out once I get there, and see if they also have vegan versions! Decarie is a bit of a trek from Mile End where we will be living. And you know, I'd have to get off the couch to go try them.
But it might just be worth it. Maybe. I'll be sure to update you once I'm on the ground in la belle province after 1 November. For now I have to go pack some more boxes, and check a few more "to do's" off our monster list before we leave.
And maybe get a donut before they are out of reach.
